Photographing the Origins of Coffee

Have you ever wondered about the origins of your morning cup of coffee? If you've ever searched for the history of coffee, you've probably come across the famous tale of how coffee was discovered in Ethiopia by a goat herder named Kaldi. In this blog post, I will take you on a captivating journey through the world of coffee photography.

A Passionate Encounter

It all started in 2017 when I had the opportunity to capture the essence of coffee through my videography work with Ashenafi, an experienced expert in the coffee industry. As we traveled through different coffee regions, I was fascinated by Ashenafi's knowledge and enthusiasm. He shared stories about coffee farmers, their unwavering dedication, and the meticulous process of selecting and cultivating high-quality coffee beans.

From Crop to Cup

These experiences ignited my interest and appreciation for coffee, leading me to collaborate with various coffee experts, exporters, and NGOs. Through these connections, I had the opportunity to delve even deeper into the fascinating world of coffee. Our adventure took us to the enchanting landscapes of Kaffa, where the legendary story of Kaldi unfolded. In this region, where it all began, we witnessed sprawling coffee plantations that stretched as far as the eye could see. Our journey continued to Yirgacheffe, Sidamo, Harrar, Jimma, Limu, Guji, Bonga, Agaro, and Zege each offering a unique coffee experience. Through my camera lens, I captured the picturesque beauty of these places, where coffee thrives in harmony with nature.

Meeting the Coffee Heroes

The true essence of coffee lies in the hands of the remarkable individuals who grow and harvest it. Along the way, I had the privilege of meeting coffee farmers and witnessing their dedication firsthand. These hard working men and women pour their hearts and souls into cultivating the finest coffee beans, ensuring that every cup overflows with flavor and quality. Their stories, passed down through generations, shed light on the deep-rooted traditions and cultural significance of coffee in Ethiopia.

Beyond the Beverage

Coffee is more than just a drink; it connects people, cultures, and communities. Through my lens, I aim to capture the essence of this connection and share the stories of those whose lives revolve around coffee. From the early morning rituals in coffee houses to the bustling markets where beans are traded, I want to shine a light on the vibrant tapestry that coffee weaves in Ethiopian society. Through photo stories, I hope to reveal the beauty and complexity of coffee, showcasing its impact on livelihoods and the rich heritage it carries.
